Handwoven Zapotec Rugs |
These Zapotec rugs are from Teotitlan Del Valle, a small village in the state of Oaxaca located in the southwestern part of Mexico. They dedicate themselves to hand-weaving Zapotec rugs (Tapetes), a tradition passed down from generation to generation from the ancestors of the Pre-Columbian era. They pride themselves in using nothing but the best quality of 100% sheep wool. The fibers in the wool are carded and then spun by hand. During this process the wool's rich fat called lanolin is felt through the fingers. This wool creates threads that are smooth and very resistant. Each Zapotec rug is made by hand and features a special design. This makes each and every rug a unique work of art that will only increase in value in years to come. You can be assured that the rugs will last and sustain their value. The colors used for the rugs are a special blend of dyes made from a large selection of plants, insects, and minerals. Among these are the Indigofera plant, and the Cochineal bug. This in part is what makes these Zapotec rugs last so long while maintaining their color and texture. There are many designs of Zapotec rugs in various sizes to accommodate different buyers. In addition, the rugs are also made from natural wool colors that come directly from the various colors of sheep. Our collection of tapetes are suitable for wall hangings, place-mats, area rugs, hall runners, and small rugs for entry ways and other decorative uses. |
